Best Time to Visit Schönbrunn

Discover the ideal times to visit Schönbrunn Palace for the best experience.

Schönbrunn welcomes around 4 million paying visitors a year — and many more roam its free outdoor gardens — making it the single most visited attraction in Austria. The crowd pattern is very predictable: large coach groups from the central Vienna hotels arrive between 10:30 and 14:00, locals come for sunset on the Gloriette hill, and the gardens are essentially empty from sunrise to 09:00 and again from 19:00 onwards. Pair this page with our opening hours and visitors guide to plan around the rhythm of the estate.

When to come — and when to absolutely avoid

By season

Quietest: Mid-January to mid-March, and again all of November. Snow on the Great Parterre is breathtaking, the palace state rooms are warm and the queues at the Schloßstraße turnstile collapse to nothing. Cold (-3°C average in January) but the bare-tree silhouettes of the Gloriette against a winter sky are unforgettable.

Busiest: July and August, the Christmas Market weeks in December, and Easter weekend. Saturdays from May to September the palace can sell out its midday slots online the day before. Avoid the Austrian National Day (26 October) at Schönbrunn unless you're specifically there for the holiday crowds.

Best of both worlds: Late April–early June and mid-September–mid-October — gardens in full colour (tulips and roses in spring; copper foliage and the dahlia beds in autumn), palace doable at 09:30, and outside the peak coach window the Gloriette hill is calm.

By day of the week

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are noticeably calmer than the weekend. Monday is fine but slightly busier because some Vienna museums close on Monday and tourists redirect to Schönbrunn. Saturday afternoon is the single busiest slot of the week — avoid it if you can.

By time of day

The first palace slot at 09:30 is by far the quietest of the day. Slots after 16:00 in summer are also markedly calmer than the 11:00–14:00 peak. For photos and the Gloriette view, the magic windows are sunrise (palace bathed in golden light from the front) and sunset (golden parterre lit from behind) — both free and both worth setting an alarm for.

A sunrise trick Vienna locals share quietly

If your schedule allows it, arrive at the Schönbrunn gates 30 minutes before sunrise. The gardens open with the sun — there are no turnstiles to the park itself — and you can walk straight in. Climb to the Gloriette while the city is still asleep, sit on the steps facing the palace and the city skyline, and watch the morning light wash over the Habsburg residence below. It's the single most photographed view of Schönbrunn, and you'll have it entirely to yourself.

From there, descend to the Neptune Fountain for a second iconic shot, walk the Great Parterre, and time your arrival at the palace turnstile for the 09:30 first slot. By the time the first coach groups roll in around 10:30, you'll be halfway through the Great Gallery — exactly the room they'll be queueing to enter. Finish with coffee at Café Residenz before the Apfelstrudel show at 11:00.

Best Time FAQ

When to come — and when to absolutely avoid

When is Schönbrunn least crowded?
Tuesday or Wednesday mornings in January, February or November, with the first 09:30 palace slot. The outdoor gardens are quietest immediately at sunrise and again from 19:00 onwards in any season — they're free and effectively empty outside business hours.
When is it busiest?
Saturday afternoons from May to September, the first three weekends of December (Christmas Market peak), Easter weekend, and the 26 October Austrian National Day. School holiday weeks in July and August can sell out midday palace slots online the day before.
Is sunrise really worth it?
Yes — possibly the single best moment of the day at Schönbrunn. The palace facade glows gold from the front, the Gloriette is empty, and you'll share the gardens with joggers, dog-walkers and a handful of photographers. Free, magical, and the only time you'll truly feel the imperial estate at peace.
Are mornings or afternoons better in the palace?
Mornings, every time. The 09:30 first slot is markedly the quietest. The 11:00–14:00 window is the peak, particularly in the Great Gallery. Late-afternoon slots (16:00+ in summer) are better than midday but never as quiet as the morning.
How early should I book?
At least 1–2 days ahead in summer and on weekends; first slots and Saturday slots sell out fastest. In low season (January–February), morning of is usually fine. Sisi Ticket combos and the Gold Pass sell out fastest because they include Hofburg slots.
Should I avoid weekends entirely?
Not entirely. Saturday before 10:30 and Sunday after 16:00 are perfectly manageable. It's the 11:00–15:00 window on weekends that gets uncomfortable in summer — every coach group on a Vienna day-tour seems to arrive simultaneously.
Is the Christmas Market worth it?
Yes — Schönbrunn's Christmas Market in the Ehrenhof courtyard runs from mid-November to 4 January and is among Vienna's best, with mulled wine, Käsekrainer sausages and crafts under the imperial facade. Visit in the late afternoon when the lights come on; book a palace tour for the same day to combine indoors and outdoors.
Does rain make a difference?
Yes — rain genuinely thins out the outdoor crowds, since most casual visitors are at Schönbrunn for the gardens and the Gloriette. The Palm House, the palace interior and the Carriage Museum become much more pleasant on rainy days; queues at the palace turnstile drop noticeably.
