Free & Reduced Schönbrunn Tickets

Find out who qualifies for free or reduced entry to Schönbrunn Palace and how to book.

Schönbrunn has a generous free-entry and reduced-fare policy — particularly broad for EU residents under 19 — and the outdoor gardens are entirely free for everyone, every day. The eligibility list for the palace interior, the Gloriette, the Carriage Museum and the Palm House is broader than most visitors realise. See our visitors guide and accessibility page for related information.

Who qualifies

Who enters free

    • The gardens, Great Parterre, alleys and Gloriette hill: Free for everyone, every day, sunrise to sunset, all year.
    • Under-6s: Free at the palace, the Gloriette, the Carriage Museum and the Palm House.
    • EU/EEA residents aged 6–18: Free at the palace state rooms with valid ID showing age and residence.
    • Disabled visitors: Free at the palace, the Gloriette, the Carriage Museum and the Palm House with a valid disability card. One companion also enters free.
    • ICOM and ICOMOS members: Free with a valid professional card.
    • Austrian teachers (Lehrerausweis) on official school visits: Free with valid documentation.
    • Journalists with press card: Free at the palace.

Who gets a discount

The reduced rate (~€15 on the Imperial Tour, ~€19 on the Grand Tour) applies to: children and teenagers aged 6–18 (non-EU), students under 26 with a valid ISIC or equivalent, visitors over 65, Wien-Holding card holders, and group bookings of 10+ people. The Vienna PASS includes Schönbrunn Imperial Tour admission. The Sisi Ticket bundles Schönbrunn with the Hofburg Imperial Apartments and the Imperial Furniture Collection at €49 — about 15% saving versus buying separately.

How to claim a free or reduced ticket

Under-6s: book a free timed-entry ticket online — it's in the same flow as the paying tickets, just choose the €0 option for the child. Bring an ID document with date of birth on the day.

EU residents 6–18: book a free timed slot on the palace site, then bring valid ID showing both age and EU/EEA residence — passport, national ID card, or residence permit. Non-EU residents aged 6–18 do not qualify for the free rate; the rule is strict.

Seniors over 65: not free, but eligible for the reduced rate at the on-site box office with photo ID. Reduced tickets cannot be booked online — buy on the day at the visitor centre. (Worth knowing: the queue saving from online booking usually outweighs the senior discount unless you're visiting outside peak hours.)

Disabled visitors and companions: book the disabled visitor's ticket first; the companion ticket is added automatically at no extra charge during checkout. Bring a valid disability card or equivalent proof on the day.

Bring proof: ID with date of birth for under-6s, ID + proof of EU residence for under-19s, the relevant card or pass for everyone else. Staff at the entrance check randomly — having proof on you avoids any awkward conversations.

Free & Reduced FAQ

Eligibility, documents, and edge cases

Do under-6s really enter free?
Yes. A free timed-entry ticket is still required — book it in the same order as paying adults. ID with date of birth may be requested at the turnstile.
Are EU residents under 19 free?
Yes — but only EU/EEA residents, and only at the palace state rooms. Non-EU citizens aged 6–18 pay the reduced rate (~€15 Imperial Tour, ~€19 Grand Tour), even with an international student card. Bring a passport, national ID card or residence permit as proof.
Are seniors free?
No, seniors over 65 are not free at Schönbrunn — but they do qualify for the reduced rate at the on-site box office with photo ID. Reduced tickets aren't bookable online; if you're visiting in peak season the queue savings from buying an adult timed ticket online usually outweigh the small senior discount.
Do students get a discount?
EU students under 19 enter free at the palace. Students aged 19–26 (EU or international) pay the reduced rate with a valid ISIC or equivalent student card. Austrian students with a Studierendenausweis qualify for the same reduced rate.
Can carers enter free?
Yes — one companion of a disabled visitor is admitted free at the palace, the Gloriette, the Carriage Museum and the Palm House, and the disabled visitor themselves enters free with a valid disability card. See our accessibility page.
Is there a family ticket?
Yes — the Schönbrunn Family Ticket covers two adults plus up to three children aged 6–18 for €58 on the Imperial Tour or €74 on the Grand Tour — roughly 15% saving versus buying separately. EU residents under 19 are free anyway, so the family ticket only pays off for non-EU families.
Does the Vienna PASS cover Schönbrunn?
Yes — the Vienna PASS (1, 2, 3 or 6 days) includes free entry to the Schönbrunn Imperial Tour, the Gloriette terrace, the Maze, the Privy Garden and the Carriage Museum, plus 70+ other Vienna attractions and a hop-on-hop-off bus. Strongly recommended if you're seeing 4 or more major sights in 2 days.
Are teachers free?
Austrian teachers with the Lehrerausweis on official school visits enter free. Foreign teachers do not qualify unless they hold an ICOM, ICOMOS or equivalent professional museum card. School groups have a separate booking process via schoenbrunn.at — book at least 4 weeks ahead in summer.
